Young Tennis Aces Hoping To Be A Smash-Hits at Vale Championships
Youngsters from across the Vale of Glamorgan are busily perfecting their serves, smashes and volleys in preparation for the county’s Primary Schools Tennis Championships.
Taking place at three Vale tennis clubs during May, the championships have been organised by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Dragon Sport team in partnership with Tennis Wales.
Teams of four players will compete and the winners in three age groups – Year 3 and under, Year 5 and under, Year 6 and under - will then advance to represent the Vale in the regional finals later this summer.
The Dragon Sport initiative aims to get primary school pupils active from a young age by encouraging greater numbers of seven to 11-year-olds to take part in extra-curricular sport. Led by the Sports Council for Wales and funded by the National Lottery, the scheme focuses on eight sports – hockey, football, athletics, cricket, rugby, golf, netball and tennis.
Primary School teachers who would like to put forward teams to enter the championships are asked to contact the Vale’s Dragon Sport Co-ordinator Rachel McGuinness, who said: “Tennis has proven to be a really popular Dragon Sport and we are really looking forward to seeing a few budding Andy Murrays on court putting the skills that they have learnt into a match situation.”
Rachel added: “I’d like to thank all the tennis clubs who will be hosting and organising the championships, and Cowbridge Tennis Club as well who have been promoting the championships amongst their members.”

Dinas Powys Lawn Tennis Club, 7 May – Year 6 and under (mini green)
Penarth Lawn Tennis Club, 12 May – Year 3 and under (mini red)
Windsor Lawn Tennis Club, 14 May – Year 5 and under (mini orange)
