MAYOR GETS IN ON DRAGON SPORT SUMMER FUN !

The Mayor of Neath Port Talbot, Councillor Elwyn Jones visited two of the Dragon Sport Summer Fun schemes this week, to get a taste for the fun and fair play with Draig. Both the Mayor and Mayoress spent time chatting to volunteers, coaches and children at Tonmawr 2000 and Cwmafan Junior School, and saw the children participating in a variety of fun packed games.

The children took great interest in the Mayorall Chain, with the Mayoress looking on and explaining the history of the Chain.  At Tonmawr, the Mayor was introduced to Victoria Billington, 13, who after participating in Dragon Sport until she was 11, now volunteers on the scheme each summer to help the coaches and children (including her younger brother!)

Dragon Sport is a Sports Council for Wales initiative aimed at getting primary school aged children involved in extra curricular sport.  With the growing trend in childhood obesity, Dragon Sport is pulling out all the stops to get children away from their computer games and out into the fresh air to have bags of fun this summer!

The last two weeks have been a great success with all of the children having a great time, and the next two weeks promise to be even more action-packed, with the scheme visiting Cwrt Herbert in Neath, Ystalyfera, Cymmer Afan and Coed Hirwaun.

The children are trying their hands at several of the Dragon Sports, with the emphasis of each day being to have fun playing sports games, try out new challenges and to ensure ‘Fair Play’ is always associated with sport.

Following a successful 4 years, the Dragon Sport is bigger and more fun than ever!  Interested?  Download a booking form from www.npt.gov.uk/pass/dragonsport.cfm  and send it to the Dragon Sport team NOW!

A number of the venues are almost full, so sign up early. If you require more information please contact Kate Kingsley or Claire Sims on 01639 875673.
