Welcome to Dragon Sport

Netball Heroes

Name: Suzanne Drane
Sport: Netball Player

Commonwealth Games Netball Star

How did you start playing sport?
My primary school (Rydal Penrhos) was a very driven school and we participated in a variety of sports during lesson time and after school.
We were encouraged to be part of the extra curricular timetable of sports and, because our school had small numbers in each year, we were provided with a lot of playing opportunities.  I also had a very supportive family who would pick me up and drop me off for extra curricular activities and take me to community clubs.

What sports did you play when you were a child?
I was involved in a variety of sports such as swimming, gymnastics, hockey, netball, rounder.

What do you enjoy about sport?
I mainly enjoy team sports, working together with others, fun and enjoyment. Team ethos.

How do you keep fit and healthy?
Training, participating in different activities, eating a balanced diet - which can involve anything, but in proportion. Balanced lifestyle ensuring I have time for work, university, training, socialising and time for myself.

Who was the biggest influence on your sporting career?
My secondary school PE teacher (Sue Leedham) who became my school, club and county coach and helped me get spotted for the English talent system and put my name forward for the Welsh Youth team trials.

How important do you think Dragon Sport is? What impact do you think it will have on Welsh sport?
It’s imperative for youngsters to become involved in physical activity from a young age to allow them to have a taster of sports they can get involved in and to experience and decide what activities they like best.
Dragon Sport is the first step on the ladder for our future athletes - it is, therefore, a vital part in the process to allow Wales to be as successful as they can be in major events.
