How did you start playing sport? I started playing golf on a small nine hole course in Barry where my father took me from time to time at the weekend but I didn't join a club until I was 11 years old.
What sports did you play when you were a child? When I attended primary school I took part in many sports – rugby, football, cricket, tennis and athletics.
What do you enjoy about sport? As in every other sport, the best thing is to play well. Spending time practising and playing alongside fellow members of your team is brilliant and I feel fortunate to have had so many opportunities through playing golf.
How do you keep fit and healthy? We walk a long way on a 18 hole golf course and I also try to keep fit and drink lots of water – especially when I am playing outdoors in the sun.
Who was the biggest influence on your sporting career? I was fortunate at Oldcastle Primary School where I had enthusiastic sports teachers. Mrs Ryder taught us short tennis and Mr Oldfield took us in rugby. At Bridgend Cricket Club, Charles Griffiths was the coach and Peter Evans was my coach at Porthcawl Golf Club. John Collins helped me greatly as well being the coach who organised junior training sessions at Glamorgan.
My parents have always offered wonderful support and have travelled to the four corners of the globe to see me play. They have had a huge influence on me and I shall be eternally grateful for their support.
How important is Dragon sport in your opinion? What effect will the scheme have on Sport in Wales? I am personally very pleased that Tri Golf has been included in the Dragon Sport scheme. The scheme provides children with the opportunity to learn those essential all-important skills which are an integral part of various sports from a young age, and this can be really vital later on – especially when moving from junior school to secondary school where you can make an impression on new friends with your talented playing skills ! |
