Power message :
Greatest pleasure ? Winning and achieving more every time I play for Wales!

Name : Oliver Cooper
Sport : Hockey

Plays hockey for Wales.

How did you start playing sport ?
I started when I was seven through a local school sports program called Sports Cool run on Saturday mornings it gave youngsters like myself the opportunity to sample different sports. However having arrived too late to register for football I was left with no choice but to do Hockey !

What sports did you play when you were a child ?
I started swimming first which led to windsurfing but I soon got bored with early mornings and cold lakes. I played football at school as this was pretty much the only choice you have when you go to school in Manchester.

What do you enjoy about sport ?
Winning and achieving more every time I play for Wales!

How do you keep fit and healthy ?
I train hard most days - at the gym, running or on the pitch. I ensure I eat the right foods to help with my training but one of the most important aspects of training is the rest day, which I get every other week, when I do nothing and eat what I normally cant excellent!

Who was the biggest influence in your sporting career ?
There have been a number of influences during my career to date, including my first coach Derek Milne. However most important of all is my family. They have supported me through the high and low points and are always there to watch and support me, particularly when I play for Wales.

How important do you think Dragon sport is ?
Very important. Without support like this potential future athletes may never find the sport they will come to enjoy. Also if Wales is to compete at the highest level of sport they need more young people to be involved in sport from a young age. From the health aspect it is vital that young people understand the benefits that sport gives them and are given the chance to participate.

What impact do you think it will have on Welsh sport?
This can only have a positive impact in getting more young people involved with sport, whether it is for fun or at a more serious level. Through the programmes that Dragon Sport support youngsters will receive positive experiences that will help them in their futures. I know, because without a similar program when I was just seven I would never have had the chance to play hockey and enjoy the rewards of playing a sport I really enjoy.
